Internal Family Systems

Therapy (IFS)

Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a gentle, non-pathologizing and evidence-based psychotherapy approach that recognizes and addresses the multiplicity of the human psyche. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS sees us all as as being made up of subpersonalities or "parts," each with its distinct roles, perspectives, and emotions. These parts interact within a person's internal system in ways that are similar to the dynamics in a family, hence the name “Internal Family Systems”. Central to IFS is the belief that every part has a positive intention, and that understanding and healing these parts can lead to greater self-harmony and well-being.

At the heart of IFS therapy is the concept of the "Self," which is located at the core or center of our being. Self is characterized by qualities such as compassion, curiosity, clarity, and calmness. The Self is seen as the natural leader of the internal system. IFS therapy aims to strengthen the Self and help it assume its leadership role, guiding us to interact with our parts in healing ways. This involves exploring the parts, understanding their intentions, healing their wounds, and transforming their roles within the system.

Rather than focusing on symptoms alone, IFS encourages individuals to develop a deeper understanding of their inner world, leading to profound emotional healing. By fostering self-compassion and self-awareness, IFS helps individuals to unburden their parts, release painful emotions, and restore balance within their internal system.

IFS is effective in treating a wide range of things, to include:

  • depression

  • anxiety

  • phobias

  • fears

  • parenting challenges

  • reactivity

  • anger

  • trauma

  • OCD

  • addiction

    …and more!

“IFS is not just a therapy technique, it’s a way of life. You can apply its principles to all areas of your life.”

– Richard Schwartz
